Panda Bear: Last Night at the Jetty

Wednesday, 16 February 2011

Panda Bear AKA Noah Lennox has offered another divine dribble from his forthcoming album Tomboy.

'Last Night at the Jetty' is filled with wishy-washy winter imagery: cold claps; jingle jangle bells; pattering percussion. It's ensoaking.

While listening to it you may picture an underwater scene in which you and Lennox are drowning.

As you sink to your deaths, he tells a nostalgic story about your friendship:

"Dreams that we once had. Did we have them anyway?
Seems that we once had. Now we'll have them all the time."

You quickly realise Lennox is obsessed with optimism and brotherhood and adobe slats. Phshyeah, I know, he probably hasn't read Beckett. He continues:

"Didn't we--
Didn't we--
Didn't we have a good time?
I know we--
I know we--
I know we had a real time."

Now you're crying like a bitch, but you don't know it. That's because you're underwater.

Lennox builds and fades tempo with a delicate touch as the verses progress. Then using boyish vocal harmonies, he intersperses the track with a syllabic rise and fall reminiscent of Simon & Garfunkel.
