Music on Spotify and Rdio

Monday 10 September 2012

It finally happened - a way to play free music on the internet while artists get paid. Endless playlists, albums and social network integration have made streaming services like Spotify and Rdio the new way to consume muzak.

So what was the problem before this? The revenue model didn't work. Sure, you can buy music on Beatport, iTunes, or directly from band websites, but they don't make as much as the traditional big-label distribution model commanded.

But now you can listen to whole albums guilt-free, while McDonald's ads float around the screen (on Spotify at least). This can be annoying when you're three tracks into an album, but every ad you see or listen to sends dabs of cash to labels and bands who recorded it. Or subscribe to these services for an ad-free experience.

Sound too good to be true? It is. Play this Deetron/Seth Troxler track below for no-strings goodness (at their expense, and ours, of course).

You'll never know how much we love you.
