In 1962 the AT&T Communications Satellite was launched. The same year a band called The Tornados released 'Telstar', a song that paid homage to the dawn of the space age. Bolstered by US-Soviet frictions during the Cold War, the Space Race was underway.
The race peaked with the Apollo 11 moon landing on July 20, 1969. That day the US stood next to the Soviet Union, both holding their dicks out, and the US said "Hey man, don't trip on this but, aaah, my cawk is bigger than urz".
'Telstar' is a tribute to this significant leap in man's evolution. It became the first British song to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100. For The Tornados it was "mission accomplished".
With clever satellite effects and a weeping keyboard, track producer Joe Meek shoots us toward the cold infinity of space.
