i really feel that there are so few decent festivals going around these days.. a sentiment that i think is shared by many other punters, as attendances for recent festivals seem to have dropped significantly.

there are a few rays of hope left in the australian festival scene though, and one of them is st jeromes laneway.. growing from humble beginnings in a small melburnian laneway, it has fast become one of the few true music lover's festivals left: one that is truly devoted to good music & culture - not pingaz & spray tan.
its honest philosophy has seen it gain a massive following and dates at 6 separate cities across australia and new zealand. well done!

BRISBANE, FEB 4

maserati make music that leaves me breathless and exhausted. it is psychedelic prog rock that wanders through the himalayas via atlantis in true odyssey style.
if, like me, you are lamenting the lack of new material coming out of battles hq, you should give them a bit of a go- i think youll find that they fill the gap superbly.

Maserati - Monoliths

!!!'s justin van der volgen turned in this remix of 'inventions'.. and i have to say that it is a perfect electronic translation of their sound: rich, glittery progressive house that seems to visit 5 continents before it winds up.

Maserati - Inventions (Justin Van Der Volgen Remix)

maserati's latest release, passages is available for pre order here.. their next long player is slated for release some time next year.

you may have heard of a london based club called 'durr'.. ive never been there, but it does seem like an excellent club, and uber-star erol alkan is involved with it somehow and obviously named his remix of waters of nazareth after it..

durr recently sent through this clip of Free Blood which is awesome. a fair bit goes into these videos- the audio is recorded seperately and tweaked by ez alks himself so we can all feel pretty safe that the audio is really good quality..

Free Blood - Quick and Painful

good non?
here also are a couple of free blood remixes that are pretty cool in a free blood kinda way

Free Blood - Quick and Painful (Hot Chip Remix)

Free Blood - Grumpy (Greg Wilson Remix)

once upon a time i remember reading about these weird people in NY that thought/liked to pretend that they were vampires.. apparently they enjoyed to bleed a pig out into a jug or bucket and then drink the blood.. ew.

i dont know if John Pugh (former member of !!!) or Madeline Davy (fashion designer) enjoy drinking blood, but the title of their band certainly suggests that they do... (i dont think they actually do)..

Free Blood- Grumpy

somehow they made sounding way too cool actually good. and somehow those infectious, bouncy drums manage to tie all those rand0m mismatched other elements together vee nicely.. and somehow the raw sort of production really sets off the vocals.. (thumbs up!!!!!)

Free Blood - Royal Family

i guess it would be fair to describe Free Blood's sound as progressive indie-dance.. very much along the lines of !!! and Battles.. (but they are just a whole lot funner and dancier)
in fact, parallels were drawn between Battles and Free Blood in this interview.. progressive rock ""battles-style"" that you can properly dance to- would there be anything better???

this remix here got my loving approval in the way that it uses the pianos to really colour in and complete the track just after half way.

Free Blood - Royal Family (ACTH Remix)

aaaahhhh (horror?)

i have concluded that being poor really really does suck. i missed SO MANY good artists at Sounds and around town..
watching these videos really felt like i was rubbing salt into my own wounds (sorry for the dodgy quality)

Chk Chk Chk - Heart of Hearts @ The Metro

i was actually really disappointed that i didnt get to see !!!.. i fell in love with them after i heard their cover of Magnetic Field's 'take ecstacy with me' which is an awesome chillaxed, bass driven ditty with seemingly innocent and almost naive lyrics despite the subject matter..
word on the street is that on stage they become the most smashed people in the world.. watching smashed people try to perform truly is fun.

!!! - Take Ecstasy With Me (Magnetic Fields Cover)

!!! - Yadnus (Still Going To The Roadhouse Mix)

i reckon the yadnus remix has the most awesome laid back 80's kick similar to Underworld's "Underneath the Radar"- an absolute classic.. "see ya later, see ya later hhhuuuuhhhhh.. we live underneath the radar.."

modeselektor is a bit of a mystery to me.. from what i know of them, they makes really cool grimy beats similar in style to siriusmo (which is definitely a good thing). that little video snippet from Sounds looked really awesome..

Modeselektor @ We Love Sounds

pfadfinderei is a massive graphic design house in Berlin that hooked up with the modeselektor boys recently to produce the massive visual album (aka dvd/cd package) "labland dalbin".. such an interesting combination- not only really interesting beats but also some wikked designs and animations.. interesting to see how colours and shapes and bass and melody can act and react with each other..

Pfadfinderei & Modeselektor - Bell Lane

Boogybytes Vol 3 Mixed by Modeselektor tracklist here

as an added little treat for y'all, ive managed to track down and oldschool Cut Copy DJ mix from 2005.. I dont think that they get enough credit for being really good djs.
this mix sits in tempo somewhere between their FabricLive mix and 'So Cosmic"

Cut Copy Radio 1 DJ Mix Track listing in comments

Enjoy!
