Fashion Launches Rocket Launches is more an artistic statement than a band. It combines theatre, tribal riddims and improvisation in one of the most exciting musical projects to crop up in Sydney for some time.

Originally a side project between the Midnight Juggernauts, Lost Valentinos and Mercy Arms, over two years it has developed into an indie establishment away from the glamour of commercial acceptance.

But with these trend-setting bands already drenched by heavy radio play, international followings and multi-continent tours FLRL have opted out of traditional song structures and the artistic trappings of poppy riffs and catchy hooks. They've even canned a singular band lineup. Like the great Animal Collective, FLRL has no set members and those that do perform together at any given moment will often swap instruments. Don't quote me on this, but they probably share underwear too.

Steve and I saw FLRL at Siberian Nights the other week. During that dark, musty set it quickly dawned on us we weren't watching a run-of-the-mill hipster band - but a group of mystic mammals creating something organic. Seeing them play in-the-round, in a circle pit, made it a communal experience for not only the band (bouncing glances off one another) but also for the crowd that encircled them.

Performing in-the-round isn't anything new, it's fucking primal. From indigenous tribes belly-dancing around the rotisserie, to the Ensemble Theatre Company staging plays in a thespian pit, this method has given the advantage of increasing performer-audience intimacy. Huddling rhymes with cuddling, feel me?

It's not often this much talent finds itself in such a raw state, so i caught up with FLRL guitarist and Lost Valentinos hero Jono Ma. He took time out of the madness of releasing the highly anticipated album Cities of Gold to talk about what it feels like launching into orbit.

So Fashion Launches Rocket Launches is a Juggers/Mercy Arms/Lost Valentinos side project?
"It's not really a side project. It's a separate thing in its own right. There are lots of members. Infinite. FLRL involves people from all those bands you talk about and more..."

Who are the band members?
"There are no set members, and no conventionally set songs. Coming to a show is the best way to work out who does what... keeping in mind it can change at anytime."

Like, we get the gang of gypsies thing, but how did FLRL start?

"A friend of ours was launching a fashion label in a church - about 2 years ago - so we played, I think together for the first time on stage - and the band name chose itself after that..."

Does the band name mean anything?
"Originally it meant that we'd only ever play at fashion launches and/or rocket launches. But, as we eagerly waited by the telephone, it quietly dawned on us that that phone call from NASA, asking us to play at the launch of their next space mission, wasn't coming anytime soon. So we started launching our own rockets."

What’s with the circle pit performance?
"It's a way of communicating, seeing as the show is spontaneous. We need to be able to exchange ideas with one another live."

Would you agree your live set is a little shamanistic?
"No. Actually, Yes. Well, spirituality is one of the four pillars of inspiration…"

Why do you guys love drums so much?
"Probably 'cause of the way they make us move! Aside from voice, drums are the most primal instrument. But unlike the voice it's not complicated when trying to fully express a feeling with drums. And we are all animals after all..."

Why the Animal Collective-like band structure, or are you just hobos?
"'Cause we're animals."

Nice. You guys are busy with your own bands – is FLRL a creative outlet?

"FLRL is certainly a creative outlet, yes, but it’s just another thing we do. It’s natural. Though it probably could never have been conceived had we not experienced being in “bands” previously."

Will we see an EP at some point?

"There will be releases, in one way or another. Who knows, probably under a totally different name…"

Ok Jono, stop teasing. What do you want to tell people thinking of seeing you live?
"Would it be too cliché to say “expect the unexpected”?"

Um, yes.
"Yes, it is."

sunday music. day after music. train sitting music. break-up music. reading music. studying music.
comedown-core: the worst, most subjective non-genre since forever.
sure most of this music could and probably is filed under 'chillout' or something similar but i feel like these specific tracks seem to actually understand what im going through and are there to help me at my time of need.

the first and most obvious comedown-core artist would have to be m83. anything by m83. oh my god m83

m83 - Car Chase Terror

Van She - Kelly (m83 Remix)

might be my favourite ever. have nursed me through many a comedown-core moment. they are playing in sydney soon too. maybe you should buy tickets?

the second most obvious comedown-core artist would have to be cut copy. a perfectly intelligent mix of so many sounds that would soothe and numb even the most restless of minds. their tracks 'that was just a dream' and 'zap zap' (should just have been one song) are probably their most solid comedown-core works to date.. the fact that they were the permanent comedown tracks at kobi and lisa's (our old comedown shack) is a testament to this.
absolutely need to be listened to one after the other. but of course you already knew that.

Cut Copy - That Was Just A Dream

Cut Copy - Zap Zap

the new lost valentinos song serio also sits pretty underneath the fluttery cut copy flag. like i said before, i cant believe that this is the same lost valentinos that were floating around last year/the year before but i dont think that really matters. on its own merit this song is very damned sweet. comedown core sweet.

Lost Valentinos - Serio

this sun-speckled remix of asobi seksu by twins would also be a perfect addition to your next comedown-core occasion. all bendy hawaiian guitars and warm bass guitar.. so nice and hazy. the vocals offset the dreamy melody so well.

Asobi Seksu - Familiar Light (Twins Remix)

roxy music made some of the most classy and understated pop music of the '70's and '80's. now its the '00s (gonna be the '10s soon yo) and their music slides into comedown-core so easily. why cant pop music be this good nowadays?

Roxy Music - The Space Between

Roxy Music - True To Life

and what post would be complete without some kind of valerie connection?
pegase is absolutely one of the most rising of stars in that esteemed collective and i cant believe that i have never posted about him before. now seems like a good time though as this song fits the comedown core mold pretty well.
apparently this is a demo but to that i say "whatever". the wistful synths and choked vocals somehow bring '70s french movies to mind. weird hey.
if this song was approx three minutes longer it could totes be the score for c'était un rendez-vous

Pegase - Without Reason

ok im gonna stop now or else this post will go on for eternity. so many notable exclusions hey. oh well--more later. in the meantime maybe you can tell me your favourite comedown-core songs?

i have to say that in my post (and pre) good vibes melancholy, i was super pumped to do an awesome comedown-core post cos thats all i seem(ed) to be listening to (again).. but with all these issues with internet, computers and jobs- and with the prospect of a weekend hanging over my head- i kind of forgot about my awesome plans and decided to write a slightly funner post.. yay! fun! weekend!

i guess if you were in a bind, this john barera remix of brenden wesley could stand in as a comedown-core track, but i defs think i would rather hear it in a down-tempo cocktail bar, what with it's silver platter funk and sophistication.. so so cool

Brenden Wesley - How We Lustre (John Barera Remix)

on a slightly more bangy tip is this new bumblebeez remix of lost valentinos.. this is absolutely what i would love to hear after i leave aforementioned down-tempo cocktail bar. love the way bumblebeez tease and lead me into an electro-fidget wonderland.. the grimyness is enjoyable but when the crazy kicks in at about 2.41..... well it gets even more enjoyable.

Lost Valentinos - Serio (The Bumblebeez Remix)

i havent really been very sure about all the remixes that the bumblebeez have done, but this one is pretty well on the money. (good job.) as for the lost valentinos, well they are also getting their money on. they have firmly shed their old raw indie sound and are now floating around with floaty electronic acts as damn arms and even midnight juggernauts/cut copy.. high praise? check out the original (its rather glorious--)
the other remixes in this package are rather good as well- check them out here
