holy balls it is freeeezing in melbourne. i havent been this cold since i lived in canberra. and i got told today that "i ain't seen nothin' yet". a compelling reason not to move.

luke vibert has had so many alias and aka's that it all sometimes gets a little confusing. kerrier district was a little side project that he worked on a few years back to sate his disco inclinations.. while the project may have had a mixed reception, this track 'lets dance and freak' is a stone-cold classic.. any song that turns a bouncy, fun bassline like this into a serious, sophisticated affair gets major ticks from me.. (not the insect variety)

Kerrier District - Lets Dance and Freak

can you spot the metro area nod in the kerrier district name??

space ranger are a german trio that are really starting to get some serious traction in disco circles.. a lot of attention has been payed to their star wash ep from a couple of months back, and rightfully so. its deep, cosmic and thoroughly analogue vibe really seems to nail a sound that a lot of people are trying to achieve. 'phase fever' is the most upbeat off the ep, and what a shimmery banger it is.. a bassline as driving as this is sure to slay a few dancefloors out there..

Space Ranger - Phase Fever

buy space ranger's 'star wash ep' here.

we hadn't really heard any new business coming out of the tellier fortress for a while now, and to be honest, it was a little worrying. a sexuality remix cd was dropped recently, and while it may not exactly be 'new business', it is a sign that he is still alive.
with all this midnight juggernaut hysteria going around, it only seems fair that i look back on this remix that they made of 'divine' in '08. dramatic synths, resonant vocals and heavy drums make for a very classic sounding juggernauts mix:

Sebastien Tellier - Divine (Midnight Juggernauts Remix)

grab the tellier 'sexuality' remix album here..

hope to see you out in melbourne this weekend

Midnight Juggernauts - Vital Signs

i dont mean to get all spanish on here, but holy fuuuuccckkk.. juggers have dropped a new track & video and they are both off the chaaaiinnn..

'vital signs' sees a return to a more dystopia-like sound - one that they are very very good at making.. their combination of gut-wrenching euphoria and haunting, ghost-house horror make my pants tingle.. it also makes me very excited for their upcoming album 'crystal axis' which will be on the streets may 28.

as for the video.. im utterly confused as to how someone would go about making something like that.. simple in concept, but perfect in execution.. please watch it.

for more juggernaut goodness, check out this mix that they recently created in celebration of their upcoming fabriclive set (which will be taking place on may 7th..) be there or be square. (thanks again to nat from burnt waffles for the heads up)

My sister went on the pill recently and, as a result, now has huge juggernauts.

Midnight Juggernauts - TNT (Juan Maclean Remix)

Midnight Juggernauts - TNT (Emperor Machine Remix)

Midnight Juggernauts - TNT (Memory Tapes Remix)

One of these is ravey. The other one is kinda funky and then ravey. And then The Juan Maclean, I cannot fault him, so banging without even trying.

I remember being excited when i brought home a new copy of Midnight Juggernauts' first LP Dystopia when it first came out in 2007, but i don't remember why.

Now their new single 'This New Technology' is exciting but, fuck me silly, i don't know why.

It still has that epic Juggers sound, with those ominous synths and portentous harmonies. But it's moved somewhere farther afield, with a sound influenced by the likes of Pink Floyd and The Doors. Yes, yes - it harks back to 70s pop, as their drummer Daniel Stricker recently told Pedestrian.

Like the first time around, this Midnight Juggernauts release is exciting because their music infects its listeners with a thing called "party". Subsequently i'm very happy right now: i'm stuck back late at work and it's dinner time, but this new single is on repeat so i don't mind starving a little longer.

Midnight Juggernauts - This New Technology

They stop by Sydney's Metro Theatre on November 6, with support from Cut Off Your Hands and Seekae.

The new album will be out early 2010.

Good news - Glasnost have an album coming. What it’s called and when it’s scheduled for release i have no idea. Even the band is sketchy on the details, that’s how fresh this news is.

But here’s a teaser to tickle your little piggies with:

Glasnost – No Survivor

Their sound has matured considerably since the last time we featured them. That distinct tech-house sound, mixed with hints of disco, has gone from great to awesome faster than the onset of a mustard cringe. Glasnost sound like warm butter spreading on toast. Soft, yet crisp.

Play this track and bask in hearing something like Cut Copy at a pool party while Tiga skips in pink trunks and The Midnight Jigglos lounge about in floating couches, sipping martinis.

Fashion Launches Rocket Launches is more an artistic statement than a band. It combines theatre, tribal riddims and improvisation in one of the most exciting musical projects to crop up in Sydney for some time.

Originally a side project between the Midnight Juggernauts, Lost Valentinos and Mercy Arms, over two years it has developed into an indie establishment away from the glamour of commercial acceptance.

But with these trend-setting bands already drenched by heavy radio play, international followings and multi-continent tours FLRL have opted out of traditional song structures and the artistic trappings of poppy riffs and catchy hooks. They've even canned a singular band lineup. Like the great Animal Collective, FLRL has no set members and those that do perform together at any given moment will often swap instruments. Don't quote me on this, but they probably share underwear too.

Steve and I saw FLRL at Siberian Nights the other week. During that dark, musty set it quickly dawned on us we weren't watching a run-of-the-mill hipster band - but a group of mystic mammals creating something organic. Seeing them play in-the-round, in a circle pit, made it a communal experience for not only the band (bouncing glances off one another) but also for the crowd that encircled them.

Performing in-the-round isn't anything new, it's fucking primal. From indigenous tribes belly-dancing around the rotisserie, to the Ensemble Theatre Company staging plays in a thespian pit, this method has given the advantage of increasing performer-audience intimacy. Huddling rhymes with cuddling, feel me?

It's not often this much talent finds itself in such a raw state, so i caught up with FLRL guitarist and Lost Valentinos hero Jono Ma. He took time out of the madness of releasing the highly anticipated album Cities of Gold to talk about what it feels like launching into orbit.

So Fashion Launches Rocket Launches is a Juggers/Mercy Arms/Lost Valentinos side project?
"It's not really a side project. It's a separate thing in its own right. There are lots of members. Infinite. FLRL involves people from all those bands you talk about and more..."

Who are the band members?
"There are no set members, and no conventionally set songs. Coming to a show is the best way to work out who does what... keeping in mind it can change at anytime."

Like, we get the gang of gypsies thing, but how did FLRL start?

"A friend of ours was launching a fashion label in a church - about 2 years ago - so we played, I think together for the first time on stage - and the band name chose itself after that..."

Does the band name mean anything?
"Originally it meant that we'd only ever play at fashion launches and/or rocket launches. But, as we eagerly waited by the telephone, it quietly dawned on us that that phone call from NASA, asking us to play at the launch of their next space mission, wasn't coming anytime soon. So we started launching our own rockets."

What’s with the circle pit performance?
"It's a way of communicating, seeing as the show is spontaneous. We need to be able to exchange ideas with one another live."

Would you agree your live set is a little shamanistic?
"No. Actually, Yes. Well, spirituality is one of the four pillars of inspiration…"

Why do you guys love drums so much?
"Probably 'cause of the way they make us move! Aside from voice, drums are the most primal instrument. But unlike the voice it's not complicated when trying to fully express a feeling with drums. And we are all animals after all..."

Why the Animal Collective-like band structure, or are you just hobos?
"'Cause we're animals."

Nice. You guys are busy with your own bands – is FLRL a creative outlet?

"FLRL is certainly a creative outlet, yes, but it’s just another thing we do. It’s natural. Though it probably could never have been conceived had we not experienced being in “bands” previously."

Will we see an EP at some point?

"There will be releases, in one way or another. Who knows, probably under a totally different name…"

Ok Jono, stop teasing. What do you want to tell people thinking of seeing you live?
"Would it be too cliché to say “expect the unexpected”?"

Um, yes.
"Yes, it is."

well well my week of fun is over. it really is easy to forget how fun things can get when you work everyday. riding around on quad bikes, watching aidan getting hit in the groin with a paintball, and shimmying to russ chimes were all legitimate and enjoyable elements to my fun week.

anyway, i chucked a bit of a midnight run last night- left perth at 1am and arrived in sydney at 7am just in time to get to work. planes are shit to sleep on so im f'ing tired.

{tired+work=long day}

something that brightened my day a little bit were some nuggets of nuggety goodness in our mailbox.

Cut Copy - Hearts on Fire (Midnight Juggernauts Remix)

this remix is a lot different to the other juggers mixes (like the dragonette one)- i think it sounds a lot more like their album (a lot more '''''cosmic'''''). i wasnt 100% sure about this the first time i listened to it but im sure it will grow.

you might know buffet libre from their (slightly dodgy) verbena selected mixes where they get djs and etc to select tracks to go on the mix.. well they have a new project where they get heaps of artists to remix their favourite old tracks (which will presumably be mixed together- hopefully their beatmatching skills have improved). These three tracks are some teaser tracks that will be featured on this mix..

Marietta - Destination Unknown (CSK OK Remix)

Men Without Hats - Where Do The Boys Go (Mr Miyagi Maximisation Version)

George Benson - Turn Your Love Around (Database Remix)

i never have been a massive CSK OK fan- i thought their sound was a bit too laptop producer-ish.. but this remix is wicked son.. as are the other tracks.

so... as an afterthought- i checked the mailbox first thing this morn and by the time the arvo had rolled around the goodness was gone.

lesson learnt= ration out goodness whilst at work.

ive talked about this before but dont you reckon that crappy weather really makes you listen to different beats..
its been wack weather for about a week now and i have been listening to nonstop gangsta shit and strummy stuff. i remember last time it was like this (not that long ago) i started listening to proggy/dubby styled electro..

listening to different beats like this is probably a good thing before the thumping doof-doof onslaught that will no doubt take place over the long weekend.

Tupac and Notorious BIG - Runnin' (Dying to Live)

Notorious BIG - Juicy (DJ Premier Mix)

awwwww shit.

on the other side of the coin, i have also been cranking the most quiet of beats.. Angus and Julia Stone
who are awesome.
ive seen them at many various festivals recently but have only been coherent enough to watch properly once. and that one time knocked my socks off. they have a sort of mystical untouchability.. plus the amazing hotness of julia stone.

Angus and Julia Stone - Just A Boy

Angus and Julia Stone - Here We Go Again

In a similar vein to the stonezzz are Windy and Destiny, an israel duet that make cool little lo-fi/folk jams. i still cant work out what i think of the album but there are definitely a few good'uns on there.. plus her voice sounds like hope from mazzy star.

Windy and Destiny - In My Melodies

Windy and Destiny - Beg Me Please

finally- before i go and drench my self in various electronica once again here are the Last Shadow Puppets. brit-pop is not usually something i like. at all. when i read that this band featured alex from the arctic monkeys i was sceptical.
but it turned out A-OK- PHEW! some cool downtempo moody bluesy ditties.

The Last Shadow Puppets - The Age of Understatement

The Last Shadow Puppets - My Mistakes Were Made For You

yes whoa this was an alternative/rap post. whoa. dance next time.

happy weekends!

ps wow im listening to the m83 mix of shadows by midnight juggernauts.. AMAZING check it out here (and check out the lifelike mix of Does It Offend You, Yeah? while you are there- lifelike is an absolute god. man god. man of ages. god man.)
