das cutters

so this is me saying welcome to 2011 - just in time for february. a month and a bit late eh? sorry about that.

2011 has certainly kicked off with a bang hasn't it? so many excellent new releases, and we are only a month in.
i think (arguably) the one that has been on everybody's lips has been cut copy's 'zonoscope'.
how do you feel about it? it certainly is a polariser.. not what a lot of people were expecting.
personally, im still trying to decide how i feel about it. there are a couple of songs that i love ('corner of the sky' is classic cut copy bliss), a couple that i hate (first time ive hated a cut copy song) and a few in between. the mere fact that a song like 'take me over' is on the album is nearly a strike out for me.
but i wont burden you with my insight seeing as though im a couple of weeks off the pace.
today, i wanted to share another project.. one that is still very much in the cut copy batting cage.

i was pretty sad when i heard that the awesome damn arms were parting ways.. their sound was transforming so fast, i was definitely interested in seeing where it was headed.
now, thanks to das moth - a project started by the now tokyo based ex-damn arm tim sullivan and cutters - i can hopefully see at least part of their vision through.

'moon' is tim's first release and while it's sound is a bit of a tough one to place, the intense, warm disco bassline and clean synths would be most welcome poolside on a hot day..

melbourne kid cassian seems to have popped up from nowhere.. at first i thought he was the cassian from snob scrilla and csk ok fame, but after listening to some tracks, i knew he couldnt be.. no lo-fi/rough bedroom bangers here - think warm slap-bass-driven funk.. think slick friday soundtrack..

jason tyler recently sent us this song recently which definitely grinds and bangs with the best of them.. although i really strongly dislike most sorts of hip hop in electronic music, these vocals actually match the song really well. except for the 'chi-town! chi-town! chicago!' chant. that could have easily been left out.

in other djing related news, good blouse friends sosueme are playing at splendour this weekend. seriously epic news. word on the street is that they were (naturally) pretty excited when they got the call up.
so excited that they went ahead and made a mixtape for their long journey up there.
for people like me who are stuck at home, this mix might be able to act as a sort of teleport machine.. we might not actually be there, but by listening to it we can easily imagine what it would be like.

dcup + sweat it out

finally some good news in this world of swine flu and recessions.. dcup has signed to sweat it out..! have to admit that everyone in the blouse jacuzzi was stoked when the news reached the mansion.

above is quite obviously the art for his ep 'style'.. the sweat it out melting shoe thing is pretty cool hey.. duncs' decision to use a pimp slipper as his sweat it out identity was rather fitting and pretty funny. when he told me that he had chosen a slipper as his shoe, i immediately tried to work out what shoe i would have picked.. do you think you could have picked footwear like that? i'd like to say that i would pick a melted flippy-floppy thong as mine, but i think crocs would be more fitting. tell me what you'd pick. a doc marten?

it starts off full of cocktail sass and lush synths, but an aston martin spins by the dcup casino in the last third of the song and takes those synths for a bit of a drive.. such classy, subtle disco house..

a while ago i read a hilarious album review in vice. it was a review of the late of the pier album and basically just said that indie bands are now so keen not to sound like the libertines et al that they are ending up sounding all electronic-y. at the time i thought 'haha: true'.

a few months down the track (ie now), im finding this little theory being proven again and again, particularly with with aussie bands.. they seem to be trying so hard to shed the incredibly unsexy powderfinger/living end/traditional aussie indie pub sound that they have ended up sounding like cut copy or daft punk. not that im complaining or anything.

damn arms are a fairly prime example. do you think they can picture themselves playing in the daft punk pyramid?

i dont want to take anything away from the damn arms ep - it is really awesome (destination pt 2 in particular is good with its uplifting back end - you can buy the ep here) but dont you think that it is quite the far cry from their old indie sound? is that a good thing? is it like someone going for a footy team for a while then swapping sides when their old team starts going shit? hmmmm
