The art of making compilation albums is quickly becoming as important as creating original music. Take a look at 2009’s effulgent ensembles Kitsune Maison Compilation 7 and The Bomb from DJ Ross. Even Remix After All, which isn’t a compilation, used the power of combining sex-based producers into a small musical space. Strength in numbers, ja?

Now Moments of a Crisis has beamed down upon us from the cosmos. Well, from Cosmo Vitelli actually. Moments celebrates the best work from his Parisian label I’m A Cliché and is looking to be one of the biggest electro-house projects to surface this year.

For the laggard bastards out there I’m a Cliché has previously released 12-inches by Simian Mobile Disco, Yuksek, Bot’Ox, Quiet Village and Tacteel & Tekel.

The compilation comprises two discs. The first is titled ‘Overtime’ and features the label’s “classic releases”, according to the label’s publicist. The second disc is simply called ‘Holiday’. Why these names are so conceptually terrific is when you combine them, in either order, you have something called “Hedonistic Insanity”, or simply “Rip My Shirt Off This Feels So Fucking Incredible”. It's hard to argue with the ingenuity and creative forces at work here.

Overall the album is dark and brooding, like Batman gazing over a sad Gotham crying for its saviour to sever the darkness. The funked-up, rollicking ‘Converted’ (Cosmo Vitelli), ‘The Mighty Atom’ (SMD), ‘Putting in the Overtime’ (Runaway) and ‘Everywhere in Town’ (Yuksek) all glide like the Batplane through disc one, with a black & white motif in common. The rest of the disc is just excellent.

Bot'Ox - Rue de l'Arsenal (Yuksek Remix)

Disc two is more colourful. ‘Up and Down’ (Electronicat), ‘Car Jacked’ (Bot’Ox) and ‘It’s a Fine Line’ (Grease) are like shitting rainbows. They’re perfect numbers for escaping to a midday beach with a few friends. You could play them on your iPod dock while twirling around in brim hats and on surfboards, full of broad smiles and tan lines. The Canyons’ 'Blue Snakes' though, that’s just wow in an “i met god while I was tripping,” kind of way. It just didn’t occur to me until I heard it on this album, next to so many complimentary sounds.

do i even need to say anything? a yuksek remix of phoenix?? i know there are plenty of good combinations on planet earth but if you like a spot of electro house, or a even a pinch of indie dance then im guessing you'll enjoy this.

rocking a sophisticated and restrained justice-like sound, this remix slowly bubbles and froths til the last bit of the song where the melody kicks into overdrive.

and while im in extra treat mode, here is a yuksek remix of the autokratz. it was pulled off the new kitsune maison compilation which went on (pre)sale today. out officially on june the first.

this is such a complete song, but the syncopated bassline alone really made my night. i have to say that yuksek really is ticking all the boxes at the moment..

i feel like shit and its friday. what the fuck. who gets sick on a friday?? who gets sick before a night as epic as tonight? i keep trying to pep myself up by listening to bangers but subconsciously keep floating back to the same relaxing stuff ive been listening to all week. (that rubies remix truly is a gem. truly.)

however, i know that there are definitely not that many people out there that would feel like this today- so probably feel obliged to post some of the harder sort of stuff...

i think i really enjoy these last two songs so much because they are really quirky.. the sort of songs youd hear in a club and think 'wow these are interesting sounds' and thereby feel compelled to dance.. the wolfgang gartner track is really quite hard and almost nu-ravey but somehow his music is always so jacking and listenable..

Coldplay - Death and All His Friends (MMMatthias Remix)

mmmathias is a name that keeps popping up wherever you look.. he obviously really done some really good groundwork in terms of selfpromotion so good on him. his music itself is quite solid though. it is really minimalist in terms of melodic depth, so his tracks almost feel a bit like progressive electro but in a good way.. they still have good strong beats and have been finished nicely. will be interesting to see what he pulls out for his own solo compositions though.
haha think mmmattttttt and ttoommaassss or whatever they are called will feel a bit cheated by his name. or maybe it will be the other way around?? maybe they could play as a wicked 3some

im sure that noone reading this will need any sort of yuksek introduction. him and surkin really had this whole glitchy hard- yet not quite too hard- thing down for a while there.. i would think that he is still one of the most respected members of the glitchy electro community which has been so saturated and watered down in recent times..
the first two songs really give off a claustrophobic vibe to me.. for some reason images of sweaty dancing in a small sweatbox club come to mind whenever i hear them. i really like the way that the whole screechy new rave sound is balanced with bouncy, boppy - almost sensible bass in these tracks.
the second two tracks are some of his newer work.. while graveyard girl might be more to his tried and true awesome formula, amerik is definite blow your ears off nu-rave.. i like it for some reason though.. despite the high hecticity levels, i enjoy the little staccato bursts of distortion.

another inclusion into the terrifyingly shit band name club is S'Express.. (even though it is pronounced s-express i can imagine them sitting around thinking how clever they were coming up something that could be interpreted as sexpress)

after some very enlightened reading, i learned that s'express was a founding member of acid house with their song 'Theme from S'express' topping the UK singles chart in 1988.



now were in 2008, and mark moore and kitsune have revived the s'express beast to give us 'stupid little girls'.
its in a similar vein to 'theme from s'express' and just as effective.. girly vox laden with 'tude over a simple, yet edgy synth riff. very much in keeping with their hypnotic acid house hits from back in the day.
the remix definitely takes it up a notch though.. nice lo-fi electro..
the thing that makes early house, hip hop or rock or whatever so awesome is the simplicity..
